Tips For Wrapping & Packing

wrapping & packing

Moving is a time-consuming process that most people dread. However, the process can be made less complicated by following certain wrapping and packing tips from professional movers themselves.

From delicate china to antique furniture, there are strategic ways of packing just about everything. Learn from the mistakes they’ve seen customers make so your moving process goes as smoothly as possible.

Take Time To Declutter

There’s no better time to assess which possessions are important than when you’re packing up every single item in your home. Decluttering is helpful because it relieves you of the burden of maintaining and packing things you don’t need.

As you go from room to room, shelf to shelf, and closet to closet, consider how often you use each item before you pack it up. If you forgot you even had it or rarely use it, consider putting it into a different box: one designated for Goodwill or your local Buy Nothing group. The less you have to bring into your new home, the easier the moving process will be.

Keep Essentials Close

You’ll need some things the day of the move that you can’t afford to lose in the maze of boxes in the moving truck. These things may include a change of clothes, your toothbrush (and other hygiene items), glasses or contact lenses, medication, or a certain toy for the kids. Basically, these are the things you just can’t live without. Keep them in a bag or box that goes in your car or on the plane with you.

Use A Moving Truck With A Loading Ramp

A truck with a ramp will make it much easier to load and unload large items like couches, mattresses, and anything else that’s heavy. It may cost less to rent trucks without one, but the money saved likely won’t matter as much when you struggle to lift heavy objects high enough to get into the truck, resulting in hours of extra time and extremely sore arms.

Pack According To Size

This rule is common sense for professional movers but less known among homeowners who may just pack what they can in any sized box they find. But the rule is good for a reason. Small items go into small boxes, and lighter objects go into larger ones.

Have you ever tried lifting a large box with heavy items, like thick books? You probably realized your mistake quickly (movers aren’t a fan of this, either). Not only is this bad for your back, but there’s also a greater risk of having the box break

Use The Right Wrapping Materials

When planning to pack, make sure to use the right supplies. Boxes are an obvious must-have for a move but wrapping can be slightly confusing.

Fragile items should be wrapped with packing paper, newspaper, or peanuts. Larger items like furniture should be wrapped with moving blankets to minimize any damage to the item or things like drywall in staircases or corners.

Don’t Leave Large Gaps

After packing, you may find you have some gaps in your boxes. Be sure to fill those either with clothing, towels, or bubble wrap.

Label Each Box

Your future self will thank you for this once you arrive at your new place. Labels on the boxes tell the movers exactly where they go.

This is also a great organizational tool for unpacking: you can check off one room at a time, starting with the most important (the kitchen).
